As The New Year Begins…

As The New Year Begins... imageAs The New Year Begins…

As the new year begins, many of us begin thinking the same thing, time to say goodbye to the old and hello to the new. Being pregnant in the new year makes you think about your life, your relationships, and your future in an entirely new way. It often makes you more intent on making resolutions. The opportunity to become a parent causes an internal reassessment to begin, and there is no time like a new year for attention to be drawn to the changes you want to make.

Many of you undoubtedly have already set your new year’s resolutions, and perhaps by now might have even broken one or two of them. That’s the challenge with making resolutions… they CAN be broken. This is why we ask you to change your mind about how you see the new year and the changes you want to make. Make a shift from making resolutions to setting intentions. Intentions cannot be broken like resolutions.

Intentions are purpose driven and resolutions are outcome driven. When you break a resolution, its over, you have a sense of failure. If you don’t see your intention manifest immediately, that is okay. Intentions are simply placing you on a path towards your purpose. There is no failure with intention. An intention is an ongoing process of daily commitment that allows for consciousness and awareness. Intentions steer us towards making the best choices for ourselves in every moment that bring us closer to who we really are.

Resolutions often look like this:

I’ll stop smoking.

I’ll lose weight.

I’ll exercise everyday.

Sound familiar?

The challenge with sticking to these resolutions is that your brain likes to run on auto drive, through your subconscious programming.  Every time you try to do something that is not part of your habitual life, such as stopping the behavior you want to change with your resolution, your mind gets uncomfortable.  You have created instability in a smoothly running computer. Your subconscious mind, sometimes referred to as the ego, is working hard to keep things in order, use less energy, be efficient, and above all be in control. Your desire to change things is at odds with your ego.  You are set to fail when you focus on a resolution because your powerful subconscious mind is working to keep things in homeostasis, or stability. It takes more than a desire to change to see your life transform.  It takes a new way of being. This is accomplished by changing the programming in your subconscious mind.

One of the first steps to working with your subconscious is using affirmations for your pregnancy. You can find a complete description in our book, The Greatest Pregnancy Ever. Affirmations are simply intentions that can be said or viewed throughout the day to begin to communicate to your subconscious mind the new direction you are heading. They are positive statements of belief that reflect your inner intentions. Because they are rooted in the now and they exist from a place of truth, there is no possibility of breaking them. Intentions simply ARE.

Here are some sample affirmations:

•       I am surrounded and connected to love and support.

•       I have a loving relationship with my partner and those around me.

•       I feel gratitude for my baby, my partner, and my family.

•       My body is beautiful

What are your affirmations/intentions for 2012?
